During a school workshop supervised by Google’s designers, we set up the methodology used in Google to develop new services based on existing Google technology and products. In team, we made a case study and present a concept focusing on three different Google products/techno : DayDream, G Suite, Assistant.
Highlight an issue
We first analyze how people are using the various digital services along the day : where and when.
The moment of use of the various services. Here, we choose a specific persona : Ferdinand, 26 years old, a sales representative.

User journey map

We saw that the various digital services / apps are used in a giving context and in a specific moment of the day, or in a specific place. There is a lack of pushable content and information. Even if the user has its habits and routine, he alway has to go by himself look for what he need through the various apps.
Existing Services : Google Now and Google Assistant
Each service has in own app. Google Now centralizes the different Google services. It makes easy the access to the information, but it’s limited to Google services only. In the same way Google Assistant is also a hub for the different Google services and it can be connected to external services, such as Spotify or hardware system such as Philips Hue Bulb Lamp.
With this, the information from the different mobile apps are decontextualized, they are not necessarily the most appropriate to the user habits. Secondly, to set a new device on Google Assistant is complicated and it’s usually a bad experience for the user.
A new Google Service
We thought about a services which will linked all the digital services and connected devices, to make the daily life easier through pushable content. It has to be adaptive to the user through user learning. In this way, we came up with a concept : Google Journey.
Learn from your habits and environment
Anticipate actions and needs
Connect your devices and services
Google Journey is a companion which is helping the user to access easily to the information or services he or she needs all along the day. This service push the suitable content depending on the context in order to take into account the habits and the environment. Google Journey is a link between all the digital services.
The content is display in the home screen of the smartphone as a widget with a direct access to the needed information.
For example, at the leaving time for an appointment, Google Journey will display the directions; the contacts of his/her appointment in case of need; Spotify playlist…
The second aspect of Google Journey is about facilitates the settings of the external hardware product on Google Assistant. The aim is to combine hardware and software environment in one single app.
Thanks to Google Vision, the various connected devices can be recognize by Google Journey. This makes the settings user friendly.
For example, to set the Google Home, the user has to target the Google Home through the smartphone camera to set the device : Settings, add a new connected services, see the current connected services.
Illustration of the concept
This is a typical day of a 26 years old man, Ferdinand, a sales representative who works at an office and outside.
At home, in the morning
At the wake up time, the alarm rings, the shutters open itself, the light turns on, the coffee machine prepare the coffee…
During the breakfast, Ferdinand checks the news and the social feeds. Also, he is notified of the state of the traffic and advice him a leaving time to be on time.
In the car
Only the information needed in car are displayed : the directions; the contact of the appointment in case of Ferdinand need to call him; the Spotify player.
A client meeting
Thanks to the desktop Google Journey app, the files required for the meeting such as a Google Slides presentation are automatically push to the Ferdinand.
After the meeting, Google Assistant suggest a restaurant based on the user preferences.
At the office
The information available during the work time at the office helps the efficiency and the productivity. A Google Drive widget is displayed on the desktop. Also, tools such as ToDo app, Google Calendar are put forward to help the user access the information and to avoid running all the various apps at the same time.
Back home, in the evening
Google Journey analyze the Gmail information and notified Ferdinand of a delivery of the Philips Hue Bulb he previously ordered. It can be helpful to remind him if he needed to be at home.
Ferdinand can easily set up the Philips Hue bulb thanks to the Google Journey Settings. He has to point the Google Home out through his phone camera to access to the settings. Clicking the plus sign, he can add a new device. Then, he just has to target the Philips Hue Bulb through the phone camera and Google Journey will automatically recognize the new device.
Knowing Ferdinand’s habits, Google Journey create an pleasant atmosphere closing the shutters, reducing the lighting, and suggest Ferdinand to continue the ongoing Netflix series.
At sleeping time, Google Journey puts forward a Sleep Mode button. Turning this, all the Ferdinand’s connected environment will turn off or lower power and prepare bedtime : the lights turn off, the heating temperature reduce, the alarm set up...
